Welcome Home Diesel.

Last Sunday (March 24, 2013) Ashley and I officially welcomed the newest member of our little family, Diesel a 9-year-old pomeranian-maltese cross.  We adopted/took him over from Ashley’s mom as she was looking to find alternate living arrangements for the little fellow as he is believed to be suffering from “Cushing’s Syndrome” which is a disease caused by excessive cortisol which is usually caused by a tumor in the pituitary gland.  This disease can lead to a lack of control of the bladder.  I say “he is believed to be suffering from” because we are still awaiting the lab results from the vet from yesterday.  If Diesel is found to have Cushing’s Disease we can and will have him begin medication right away, and hopefully the medication will begin to alleviate many if not all of the symptoms almost immediately.  While the meds can’t reverse the symptoms or disease they can absolutely make life more manageable for owner and pets alike.

Enough with the sad talk, and back to talking about our latest family addition. IMG_2573

Diesel has been coming over to spend almost every weekend this year, so that just made the choice that much easier for Ashley and I to adopt him last weekend.

As you can see…. Diesel loves sleeping with us on our bed, and yes I’m including him in “our”, haha!

Another fun thing for Ashley and I with having a dog has been shopping for him and his stuff at PetSmart.

One thing I’m definitely being reminded of in having a dog is…. “It’s a dogs world, and we’re just living in it.” haha!!!  Around here just as I’m sure it is in your house if you own a dog, the dog/s call the shots.

Anyway this little guy has made me over the moon happy and I just can’t give him enough love and attention.  Needless to say if you’re following me on Instagram or Twitter at @BenELR you will definitely be seeing a lot more of Diesel, and reading more post that involve him here on my blog.

Thank-you for taking the time to read this post, and may your dog bring so much love and happiness into you and your family’s life.

Roasted Broccolette.

A couple of nights ago I made a couple of my favorite vegetables: 1) Kale Chips (recipe can be found at http://www.katheats.com ) and 2) roasted Broccolette, recipe which I am sharing right here right now.

start off with 1 bunch of fresh organic Broccolette.

start off with 1 bunch of fresh organic Broccolette.

You’re going to start off with 1 fresh bunch of organic broccolette, washed and dried.

Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees

With thicker stalks make small cut up the middle but be careful not to split the stalk all the way up through the top.

Ingredients:

-1 large bunch fresh organic broccolette

-6 cloves of garlic (chopped)

-2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

-2 Tsp cayenne pepper

-1 Tsp coarse salt

Place washed and dried broccolette on a baking sheet, distribute the 6 chopped garlic cloves evenly over the broccolette stalks, drizzle Extra Virgin Olive Oil evenly over broccolette, sprinkle cayenne pepper and coarse salt over the broccolette.

Place baking sheet in oven for 30 minutes or until all stalks reach golden-light brown color.

Remove roasted broccolette from oven, plate, and enjoy.IMG_2619

One of my favorite things about this vegetable is that the stalks when cooked taste very similar to asparagus, and the tops taste just like broccoli, two of my favorite veggies.

I hope you all enjoy making and eating this delicious vegetable as much as I do.

Happy cooking!

First Anniversary in Vancouver.

Last Thursday (March 7th) my beautiful wife Ashley and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary.  After a bit of debating on where to go for our anniversary trip we settled on Vancouver, British Columbia; over Phoenix, Arizona; and Las Vegas, Nevada.

This post I dedicate to our love and our marriage.

I have to say before I go any farther in this post, Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre…. An AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING hotel.  Starting at check in with the front desk moving us from a standard room with two double beds to a deluxe room with a king sized bed with a mountain view upon learning we were there for our anniversary did I mention.. floor to ceiling wall to wall windows?

The Fitness centre was filled with two weight rooms, a cardio room, full size swimming pool, and two jacuzzis, oh yeah and the cardio machines that sync to your iPhone as shown in the above picture.

Our anniversary dinner provide both magical food, and atmosphere, accentuated by a magical view of Vancouver at night.  “Top of Vancouver revolving restaurant” is a must eat at place in Vancouver for that magical romantic dining experience.

I couldn't capture my anniversary gift to Ashley due to the fog atop Grouse Mountain, but here she is enjoying a cold one before anniversary ziplining.

All Cleared to Run!

As some of you may have seen this picture on Instagram this afternoon. IMG_2538

I had a great afternoon and evening highlighted by receiving the green light from my orthopedic surgeon to run this upcoming race season which will be highlighted by the running of my first ever marathon on Sunday May 26th here in Calgary.

Now coming into my check up with my surgeon regarding my 6 times over operated on right knee I won’t lie I was just a little worried that due to some intense swelling at times over the last few months that I was going to be told that either I need to have a 7th operation this year or even just that I would need to take this year off running.  What I heard though to my happiness was that my knee has not deteriorated much if any over the last two years and that there is at this point no logical reason to operate and no need for me to shelve the runners for this upcoming race season.  It was speculated that the excess swelling as of late is directly a result of the intense training I’ve been putting my knees and body through, but with proper ice, pain killers, and elevation, and of course training there’s no reason at all why I won’t be able to accomplish this goal of mine.

On a side note if anyone in the Calgary area or will be in the Calgary area the weekend of May 25 & 26 and are looking for a great run to participate in at 5Km, 10KM, Half or Full Marathon I encourage you to check out http://www.calgarymarathon.com and come run with me. logo_scbm2012b

Thank-you all as always for taking the time and taking an interest in my blog.

Love to you all!

March 7th 2012 – March 7th 2013. Happy First Anniversary.

Today marks me and my beautiful wife Ashley’s FIRST WEDDING ANNIVERSARY, Woo-hoo we made it through our first of what will be many, no wait a lifetime of marriage and happiness together.

March 7th 2012.

March 7th 2012.

In case you haven’t yet heard or read about our wedding, we got  married in Las Vegas last March in a small chapel with 31 of our closest friends and family in attendance at the Flamingo Hotel and Casino in what was an absolutely beautiful wedding ceremony.

Today for our first anniversary we are flying this morning from Calgary to Vancouver for a small but romantic 3 night anniversary weekend getaway including a romantic revolving tower dining room restaurant dinner tonight.

Now obviously I can’t divulge too many details here as Ashley is likely to stumble upon this post before receiving her anniversary gift from me, but for her gift today I have planned something that will be a truly different experience, something that will be I think both terrifying and exhilarating at the same time for both of us.  To find out what this experience is check back on Monday to read all about MOST of our anniversary weekend, haha! Or follow me on Twitter or Instagram both at @benncarrier to find out what this “One of a kind gift” is, and trust me it’s nothing private after today 😉 .

Also while we are in Vancouver we will be seeing Grammy award-winning artist Alicia Keys tomorrow night for the second stop on her 2013 “Set the World On Fire” world tour which begins tonight in Seattle.

Now I must go pack for the weekend we leave for the airport in just over an hour, haha.

I hope you all have a terrific end to your work week, and a beautiful weekend whatever both shall bring, and I will be blogging Monday to share with you all parts of our anniversary weekend.

Greek Yogurt, Chobani or Skotidakis?

Nowadays it seems that Greek style yogurt is the only yogurt we eat.  The “It” brand of Greek yogurt right now in the U.S. and pretty much anywhere else you can find it ie: Canada, UK, and Australia definitely is Chobani.  Chobani was first started back in 2005 by Hamdi Ulukaya, and saw its first cup hit store shelves in 2007 in the U.S.A.

Sadly for me living in Canada does occasionally have its negatives such as It’s always been very difficult to find Chobani and even for a brief time recently completely unavailable in Canada.  This sad happening has forced me to seek out other Greek Yogurt brands, and what I found was Canadian based brand Skotidakis.

Skotidakis was started in 1975 by Peter Skotidakis in St. Eugene, Ontario, Canada, and now is found across Canada, and in select U.S. markets.

Now while I do long for the day when Chobani becomes available in Canada again especially in my part of Canada I will say that Skotidakis is every bit as good as Chobani.

If you have the opportunity to try both or have tried both I would love to hear your thoughts on Chobani v.s. Skotidakis.

For more information on both visit their respective sites at: http://www.chobani.com and http://www.skotidakis.com
